The West Overlook Trail traverses Fort Mountain's western ridge to a series of exposed rock outcrops and overlooks with sweeping views into the Cohutta Wilderness and across the valley toward Tennessee. Fort Mountain occupies the eastern margin of the Ridge-and-Valley physiographic province, and the west-facing overlooks provide an unobstructed vista of the parallel sandstone ridges that characterize this landscape—the same geological structure that creates the linear valleys and ridges extending from Alabama to Pennsylvania.

The trail climbs through dry chestnut oak and Virginia pine forest with mountain laurel understory, crossing several exposed sandstone outcrops where the vegetation transitions to rock-cap communities of stonecrop and blueberry. The largest overlook at the trail's end encompasses a 180-degree view from Chatsworth Valley to the southeast to the Tennessee border ridgelines to the northwest. On clear October days, the layers of blue ridges receding toward Tennessee are particularly dramatic. The moderate rating reflects several sustained rocky climbs and one significant elevation loss and regain in a creek hollow crossing. Wild turkeys and ruffed grouse inhabit the ridge, and peregrine falcons hunt from the cliff faces. Gahuti Backcountry Trail junction at mid-route provides options for extending the hike.
