Bald Cypress Trail

The Bald Cypress Trail follows the banks of the Frio River through one of the most beautiful groves of ancient bald cypress trees in the Texas Hill Country, where massive specimens with fluted trunks and distinctive knees line the riverbanks in a cathedral-like corridor of remarkable natural beauty. The Montezuma bald cypress trees along the Frio are among the largest and oldest in Texas, their spreading crowns creating a dense summer canopy that shades the river and maintains water temperatures cool enough to support native fish including Guadalupe bass, sunfish, and the federally threatened Frio gambusia. The trees distinctive root structures, called knees, emerge from the river banks and shallow water in ghostly clusters that create extraordinary photographic opportunities, particularly when the clear river water reflects the cypress canopy above. Several of the best natural swimming holes in Garner State Park are accessible from this trail, with limestone bedrock creating perfect conditions for wading and swimming in the crystal-clear spring-fed river. The water temperature remains refreshingly cool even during peak summer heat, explaining why Garner is one of the most popular state parks in Texas during summer months. Kingfishers rattle and plunge along the river, and great blue herons stand motionless in the shallows throughout the year.
