Soberanes Point Bluff Walk

Soberanes Point Bluff Walk is one of the finest short coastal walks on the entire California coast, tracing the dramatic headland of Soberanes Point through wildflower meadows and along clifftop paths above a rocky shoreline that ranks among the premier gray whale watching locations in the state. From December through April the nearshore waters off Soberanes Point serve as a natural viewing corridor for the southbound and northbound migrations of Pacific gray whales, with the shallow rocky shelf and the geometry of the point concentrating whale activity within exceptional viewing distance of the blufftop trail. Even outside whale migration season the point rewards visitors with sightings of sea otters lounging in kelp beds offshore, harbor seals hauling out on rocky islets, and the dramatic surge of Pacific swells against the ancient granite outcrops below. In spring the bluff meadows support spectacular wildflower displays including beach strawberry, seaside daisy, and lizardtail, creating a colorful foreground against the deep blue of the Pacific. The easy terrain and short distance make this walk appropriate for visitors of all ages and fitness levels, and the concentration of wildlife and scenery per unit distance rivals virtually any trail in California. Binoculars significantly enhance the whale and marine mammal viewing experience, and warm windproof layers are recommended as the coastal bluff is frequently exposed to strong Pacific winds.
