Peck Pond Trail

The Peck Pond Trail loops around the quiet, undeveloped Peck Pond and its associated wetland complex in the eastern section of George Washington Management Area, offering exceptional wildlife observation in an easily accessible setting. Peck Pond's shallow, nutrient-rich waters and emergent vegetation attract great blue herons year-round, but the trail's most spectacular wildlife feature is the active great blue heron rookery located in a grove of dead snags at the pond's northern end. The rookery hosts 15 to 25 nesting pairs annually, and from late March through June hikers can observe the enormous stick nests and the comical, prehistoric-looking juveniles that fill them by midsummer. The nesting activity is visible from the trail with binoculars without approaching close enough to disturb the birds. Beavers have extensively modified the hydrology around Peck Pond, and their dams are visible from multiple points on the loop. The surrounding upland forest of pitch pine, scrub oak, and blueberry heath represents a distinctive xeric community adapted to the sandy, well-drained glacial outwash soils of this part of Rhode Island. The trail surface is sandy throughout with minimal technical difficulty, making it an excellent choice for families, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking a contemplative, wildlife-rich walk in a setting that feels remarkably remote given its proximity to Interstate 295.
