Giant City Nature Trail is the signature hike of Giant City State Park in the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois, threading through a maze of massive Pounds sandstone bluffs that tower 50 to 80 feet above the trail floor, creating a city-like network of straight-walled passages, alleys, and plazas that gave the park its evocative name. The sandstone here has fractured along two sets of nearly perpendicular joints, creating city-block-like sections of rock separated by straight, narrow passageways — the effect is genuinely uncanny, like wandering through the ruins of an enormous ancient city. The sandstone walls display extraordinary erosional detail: honeycomb weathering pits, solution channels, and stained mineral streaks in ochre, rust, and charcoal. The understory between the rock formations is shaded year-round, supporting a lush community of ferns and mosses including Christmas fern, rattlesnake fern, and several species of spleenwort fern growing directly from rock crevices. The trail is paved through the main formation area and transitions to packed earth on the outer loop. Informational plaques at key points explain the geological processes that created the formations. The adjacent CCC-built Giant City Lodge, constructed in 1939, is one of the finest examples of rustic park architecture in Illinois.
