Roe River Walk

The Roe River Walk is the shortest trail in the park system and quite possibly the most unusual, tracing the full length of the Roe River, the official Guinness World Records holder for the world shortest river at approximately 200 feet from its source at Giant Springs to its confluence with the Missouri River. Despite its diminutive length, the Roe River is a fully functioning watercourse with measurable current, a defined channel, and its own small ecosystem of aquatic invertebrates, algae, and the rainbow trout that drift between the spring pool and the river mouth.

The walk from the Giant Springs pool edge to the Missouri River confluence takes only a few minutes at any pace, but the novelty of the world record designation and the remarkable clarity of the spring water make even this brief stroll genuinely memorable. The Roe River flows at a constant volume and temperature year-round, fed entirely by the Giant Springs discharge, giving it an almost artificial appearance of perfect constancy that contrasts with the seasonal fluctuations of the adjacent Missouri. Interpretive signage at both ends of the river explains the record history and the hydrological connection to the vast aquifer system that feeds Giant Springs from distant recharge zones in the mountains to the east. This tiny trail is particularly popular with children and families who delight in the world record distinction and the crystal-clear spring water.
