Carmel Canyon Loop

Carmel Canyon Loop provides a completely different perspective on the Goblin Valley landscape by ascending to the canyon rim above the goblin formations and following the elevated terrain for sweeping aerial views of the hoodoo field below. The 3.4-mile circuit gains 200 feet to the rim and then traverses slickrock terrain typical of the Colorado Plateau, where the exposed Entrada Sandstone creates a smooth, undulating surface that requires careful navigation in wet conditions.

From the rim, the density and variety of the goblin formations become apparent in a way impossible to appreciate from ground level — the valley appears as a sea of rounded stone figures extending across the reddish desert floor, with the Henry Mountains rising dramatically to the west and the San Rafael Reef's jagged spine visible to the north. The canyon section of the loop descends through a narrow wash flanked by smooth canyon walls before returning to the valley floor. Hikers should carry ample water as shade is minimal and Utah desert heat can be intense from May through September. Leashed dogs are permitted. The $20 per vehicle fee covers access to all areas of the state park including camping facilities.
