Horseshoe Trail

Horseshoe Trail is Golden Gate Canyon State Park's premier backcountry circuit, an 8.1-mile loop that ventures deeper into the park's wilderness terrain than any other trail in the system. Gaining 1,200 feet across its length, the route visits remote corners of the park rarely seen by casual visitors, traversing ridgelines, dense conifer backcountry, and alpine meadows that feel genuinely wild despite the park's proximity to the Denver metro area.

The trail earns its strenuous rating through cumulative elevation rather than any single brutal climb — the ups and downs are sustained and continuous, challenging hikers' legs and cardiovascular systems over the full 8-mile distance. The rewards match the effort: long-range views from multiple ridge crossings, excellent wildlife habitat that supports elk, deer, bear, and mountain lion, and the deep forest solitude of mature spruce-fir woodland. The horseshoe-shaped route is designed to be hiked in either direction, with both options delivering varied and engaging terrain. Backcountry campsites are accessible from this trail for those who want to extend their visit overnight. Leashed dogs are permitted. The park charges $10 per vehicle and the trailhead requires a short approach hike from the main parking areas.
