Mule Deer Trail

Mule Deer Trail offers a compact but rewarding 2-mile loop through the characteristic landscapes of Golden Gate Canyon State Park, ascending 400 feet through a combination of open mountain meadow and dense spruce-fir forest. Despite its short distance, the trail delivers genuine mountain atmosphere and reliable wildlife encounters — the park supports a healthy mule deer population that frequents these meadow edges, particularly in morning and evening hours.

The meadow sections are carpeted with wildflowers in summer, including blue columbine, Colorado's state flower, which thrives in the moist mountain soils. The forest stretches provide cooling shade on warm days and a cathedral-like quiet far removed from the Front Range activity visible to the east. Small granite outcrops along the route offer informal rest spots and occasional views through the trees. The loop is a good choice for hikers with limited time or those warming up for a longer outing on one of the park's more demanding trails. Leashed dogs are permitted throughout Golden Gate Canyon State Park. A $10 per vehicle day-use fee is collected at the park entrance station located near the visitor center.
