Grassy Ridge Mine Trail

Grassy Ridge Mine Trail leads through lush gorge-country forest to the site of a historic corundum mine that operated in the late 19th century. The trail follows a clear mountain stream for much of its length, crossing several wooden footbridges and passing through stands of enormous eastern hemlock trees, some over three feet in diameter. Corundum, the mineral known in gem quality as ruby and sapphire, was mined extensively in this part of western North Carolina during the 1880s and 1890s. Remnants of the mining operation including open shafts, ore dumps, and old equipment can still be seen at the trail terminus. The area's geology supports a remarkable diversity of wildflowers, and spring ephemerals like trillium, trout lily, and jack-in-the-pulpit carpet the forest floor in April. The high annual rainfall in Gorges State Park means stream crossings can be challenging after heavy rain, and the trail surface can be muddy for extended periods. This is one of the less-crowded trails in the park, offering a more contemplative experience than the popular Rainbow Falls route. The park charges no entrance fee.
