Wilson Creek Trail

The Wilson Creek Trail offers one of Grayson Highlands State Park's most complete wilderness experiences, looping through a dramatic transition from high-elevation spruce-fir forest to open wind-scoured balds that feel genuinely remote and untamed. The trail climbs steadily from the trailhead at Massie Gap parking area, following Wilson Creek through a corridor of old-growth red spruce and Fraser fir, two boreal species found in Virginia only above 4,500 feet. This forest type, more typical of Canada than the mid-Atlantic, supports a unique assemblage of breeding birds including Blackburnian warblers, red-breasted nuthatches, and winter wrens whose bubbling songs echo through the dense canopy. As the loop gains the upper balds, sweeping 180-degree views extend south toward North Carolina and west into Tennessee. The characteristic feral ponies are regularly encountered grazing on the bald summits. Rocky outcrops of ancient metamorphic gneiss break through the thin soil, creating microhabitats for rare high-elevation plants. The descent back through Wilson Creek drainage can be slippery on exposed roots and requires attention after rains. This loop connects to the Appalachian Trail at multiple points, allowing for extended route options toward Mount Rogers.
