The Brimstone Loop is the most comprehensive trail experience at Guernsey State Park, circuiting the reservoir while passing through diverse terrain that includes sandstone ridges, open grasslands, and cottonwood-lined shoreline. The full loop provides exceptional perspectives on Guernsey Reservoir from multiple elevations and angles throughout the journey.

A highlight of the Brimstone Loop is its proximity to the famous Oregon Trail ruts located just adjacent to the park. These deeply worn grooves in the soft sandstone bedrock were carved by thousands of pioneer wagon wheels between the 1840s and 1860s and remain remarkably preserved, offering a tangible connection to one of America's great migration stories. The adjacent Register Cliff, where pioneers carved their names, is also accessible nearby.

The trail climbs several modest ridges that provide panoramic views of the surrounding high plains and the North Platte River valley. Pronghorn antelope are frequently spotted on the open grassland sections, and white pelicans are commonly seen soaring over the reservoir.
