Big Gunpowder Falls Trail

The Big Gunpowder Falls Trail follows the namesake river through a surprisingly wild gorge that cuts through the Baltimore County piedmont, providing an extended riverside ramble through terrain that feels genuinely remote despite its proximity to the metropolitan area. The Gunpowder River is one of the premier catch-and-release trout streams in Maryland, managed as a Blue Ribbon trout fishery with special regulations protecting the wild brown trout population that inhabits the cold, clear river. Fly anglers working the pools and riffles are a constant presence from early spring through fall, and the trail shares corridor with the river for nearly its entire length, providing numerous viewpoints into the water from elevated banks. The gorge walls support mature mixed hardwood forest of tulip poplar, beech, sycamore, and red oak, with extensive rhododendron thickets along the lower slopes that bloom spectacularly in late June. Osprey nest along the river and are frequently observed plunge-diving for trout in the deeper pools. American eels undertake remarkable spawning migrations up the river from the Chesapeake Bay, negotiating the dam at Prettyboy Reservoir. The trail passes through the historic community of Monkton, where the restored Northern Central Railway station now serves as a visitor center for the adjacent Northern Central Rail Trail. Several road crossings allow point-to-point shuttle options.
