Gunpowder Falls State Park is Maryland's largest state park, and the Sweet Air Area on its eastern edge protects a rolling piedmont landscape of farm fields, hedgerows, hardwood forest, and the Little Gunpowder Falls river corridor that is among the finest examples of intact piedmont habitat remaining in the Baltimore metropolitan region. The Sweet Air loop traverses this varied landscape on a network of trails that wind along the river, climb through upland oak forest, and cross open meadows managed for wildlife. Active beaver colonies have transformed sections of the floodplain into wetland complexes visible from the trail, with dammed ponds supporting wood ducks, great blue herons, and muskrats. The meadow sections are managed with periodic mowing to maintain early successional habitat for grassland birds including field sparrows, yellow-breasted chats, and in favorable years bobolinks during migration. White-tailed deer are abundant throughout, and the large forest blocks support breeding scarlet tanagers, wood thrushes, and red-eyed vireos. River otter have been documented along Little Gunpowder Falls in recent years, evidence of improving water quality in the watershed. The trail surface is natural dirt and mown grass, with several stream crossings on log bridges. The Sweet Air Area parking lot fills early on weekend mornings, particularly during spring warbler migration when birders converge on the diverse habitats.
