Moore's Wall Loop

Moore's Wall Loop reaches the highest elevation in Hanging Rock State Park, traversing a dramatic quartzite escarpment that towers above the surrounding piedmont. The trail climbs through dense hardwood forest before emerging onto the top of Moore's Wall, a sheer cliff face that drops hundreds of feet to the valley below. This exposed ridge is a premier rock climbing destination, and hikers frequently spot climbers working technical routes on the vertical faces. The summit ridge offers sweeping views north into Virginia and west toward the Blue Ridge. The loop descends through a different drainage, adding variety and passing through several distinct plant communities including dry ridge forest and moist cove species. Wildlife sightings are common, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various hawk species riding thermals off the cliff face. The full loop involves significant elevation change concentrated in two steep sections. Trekking poles are recommended for the descent. The park's $7 vehicle fee applies.
