Upper Cascades Trail

Upper Cascades Trail leads to a 12-foot waterfall on Cascade Creek, one of several waterfalls within Hanging Rock State Park. This short and accessible path winds through a cool, shaded ravine lined with mountain laurel and rhododendron, making it particularly spectacular in late May and early June when both species are in full bloom. The falls themselves drop over a sandstone ledge into a shallow plunge pool where visitors can wade on warm days. The creek flows strongest after winter rains and spring snowmelt, but the waterfall runs year-round. This is one of the park's most family-friendly trails given its gentle grade and short length. Interpretive signage along the route explains the local geology and plant communities. The trailhead is accessed from the main park road, and the route is well-maintained with some wooden footbridge crossings over seasonal streams. Cascade Creek eventually joins the Dan River downstream, which forms the park's northern boundary. The $7 vehicle fee applies to all park visitors regardless of which trail is chosen.
