Osprey Loop

The Osprey Loop is a shorter and more intimate alternative to the longer ranch trail routes, winding through riparian meadows and open forest stands along a quieter stretch of the Henry Fork corridor. The trail takes its name from the impressive osprey population that nests and hunts throughout the park, and a patient observer will almost certainly witness these spectacular fish hunters diving feet-first into the river to emerge with a wriggling trout.

Trumpeter swans are perhaps even more emblematic of Harriman State Park, and this loop passes several of their favored nesting areas. These enormous birds, once nearly extinct in the contiguous United States, have rebounded in part because of protected habitat in the Island Park region. Spring visits coincide with cygnet rearing, when adult pairs shepherd fuzzy gray young along the river banks. The loop also traverses open sagebrush flats where sandhill cranes forage and mule deer graze in the early morning. Fall colors transform the willows and aspens into brilliant golds and reds, making October visits particularly rewarding for photographers and nature lovers exploring this exceptional wildlife sanctuary.
