Canyon Overlook is a short but steep out-and-back route that climbs 400 feet in just one mile to reach a dramatic viewpoint overlooking the geology of the Grand Hogback anticline, one of the most visually striking geological features in western Colorado. The Grand Hogback is a razor-sharp ridge of upturned Cretaceous-age sandstone and shale that runs for miles across the landscape, and from the overlook its full sinuous length is visible against the backdrop of the Flat Tops Wilderness. This short trail packs an outsized geological and scenic punch for the minimal time investment required. Interpretive panels at the overlook explain the tectonic forces that tilted these ancient seabed layers nearly vertical over millions of years. The trail surface is rocky and uneven, requiring sturdy footwear despite the short distance. Prairie rattlesnakes are occasionally encountered on warm days when the rocky terrain holds heat, so hikers should watch carefully where they place their hands and feet. The $10 vehicle fee applies at the park entrance. Dogs are permitted on leash but should be kept close on the narrow trail. Views of Rifle Gap Reservoir and the surrounding canyon country are exceptional from the overlook platform, making this a favorite spot for photographers during the golden hour before sunset.
