East Shoreline Trail hugs the eastern bank of Rifle Gap Reservoir on an easy, nearly flat loop that is perfect for families, casual walkers, and anglers looking to explore the waters edge. At 3 miles with minimal elevation change, the trail is accessible to virtually all ability levels and offers pleasant lakeside walking through a landscape of willows, cottonwoods, and rocky shoreline typical of western Colorado reservoir parks. The trail is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers, as the cliff swallow colonies that nest in the sandstone walls above the reservoir return each spring and are visible in enormous wheeling flocks feeding over the water surface from May through August. Great blue herons stalk the shallows, and osprey dive for fish in spectacular fashion throughout the warmer months. Fishing access along the shoreline provides opportunities to catch warm-water species including largemouth bass, catfish, and tiger muskie in the reservoirs productive waters. The trail surface is well-maintained and suitable for strollers during the drier months. The $10 vehicle entrance fee is required. Dogs are permitted on leash throughout the trail. Picnic tables near the trailhead make this an easy spot for a half-day family outing combining a short walk with a lakeside lunch.
