Ridge Overlook Trail

The Ridge Overlook Trail climbs aggressively from the Snake River valley floor up the flanks of Lewiston Hill, gaining 600 feet to reach exposed ridgeline viewpoints that deliver the best accessible views of Hells Canyon available without a boat or a long backcountry journey. Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America, carved by the Snake River to depths exceeding 8,000 feet, and the ridge above Lewiston offers a dramatic introduction to this extraordinary landscape.

The trail switchbacks up through bunchgrass prairie and basalt outcroppings, passing through seasonal wildflower displays including balsamroot, bitterroot, and phlox in April and May. As elevation increases the town of Lewiston spreads below and the full confluence geography becomes clear, with the blue ribbon of the Clearwater joining the green Snake in a visible color contrast. The distant canyon walls of the Hells Canyon corridor appear to the south, their layered basalt columns rising above the river corridor. The ridge itself supports a raptor migration corridor in spring and fall, and red-tailed hawks, prairie falcons, and golden eagles are frequently observed riding thermals above the exposed hillside during seasonal movement periods.
