Baynard Trail

The Baynard Trail is the centerpiece hike in Hillsborough River State Park, looping through a hardwood hammock alongside the Hillsborough River's most dramatic section—the only Class II whitewater rapids in peninsular Florida. The river here descends over a series of limestone ledges that create genuine whitewater drops of one to two feet, an extraordinary geological feature in a state renowned for its flatness. The rapids are formed by the Ocala Limestone formation outcropping at the surface, the same aquifer rock that feeds Florida's famous springs.

The trail follows the rocky riverbank closely, providing multiple overlooks of the cascading water and the deep plunge pools below each ledge where large bass and Florida gar hold in the current. Anhinga dive from riverside branches, and river otters navigate the rapids with practiced ease. The adjacent hardwood hammock is dominated by live oak, sabal palm, and American hornbeam, with Virginia willow and swamp rose in the wet margins. Interpretive signs along the loop explain the geology of the rapids and their role in shaping the park's ecology. The park was established in 1938 and the Baynard Trail honors one of Florida's early conservation leaders.
