Wetlands Restoration Trail

The Wetlands Restoration Trail loops through one of the park's most ecologically significant areas—a formerly drained and degraded floodplain that has been actively restored to functioning wetland habitat over the past two decades. The project removed drainage ditches and control structures installed in the mid-20th century and reestablished natural hydrological patterns, with striking results: the restored floodplain now supports wading bird colonies, breeding populations of gopher tortoises in the upland margins, and a recovering population of Florida softshell turtles.

The trail passes through the restored marsh on a combination of elevated boardwalk and upland path, providing close-up views of the wetland vegetation—pickerelweed, arrowhead, and maidencane grasses that have colonized the restored cells. Great blue herons and great egrets wade the shallow margins, and wood storks occasionally forage in the deeper pools. The gopher tortoise colony in the adjacent upland is one of the largest in Hillsborough County, with burrows clearly visible from the trail. The restoration serves as an educational model, and interpretive panels along the route document the before-and-after ecological transformation with historical photographs.
