Ash Cave Trail – Hocking Hills Sp
Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in Ohio and one of the most spectacular geological features in the entire Hocking Hills region. The cave alcove stretches an extraordinary 700 feet wide and nearly 100 feet deep, with a ceiling that arches up to 90 feet overhead. A seasonal waterfall spills over the lip of the cave from Queer Creek above, creating a gossamer curtain of mist that collects in a shallow pool below. The name derives from the enormous mound of ash — estimated at several wagon loads — found here by early European settlers, left by Indigenous peoples who used the shelter for centuries. The paved accessible trail from the parking area is flat and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, making Ash Cave one of the few truly accessible natural wonders in Ohio. In winter, the waterfall may freeze into a dramatic column of ice that persists for weeks. The cave interior stays cool even in midsummer, and the acoustics amplify every drip and echo into a natural cathedral effect. Interpretive signs explain the geology of Black Hand sandstone and the cultural history of the site. Plan visits on weekday mornings to avoid the substantial weekend crowds.
