Breakneck Ridge Trail – Hudson Highlands Sp
Breakneck Ridge is consistently ranked as the most-hiked trail in the greater New York metropolitan area, drawing over 100,000 visitors annually to its dramatic scrambling ascent directly above the Hudson River. The trail begins immediately from the Breakneck Ridge Metro-North train station, making it uniquely accessible by public transit from Grand Central Terminal in under 90 minutes, explaining its extraordinary popularity among carless New York City residents. The first half-mile climbs nearly 1,000 feet through continuous hands-on rock scrambling up exposed gneiss faces above the Hudson, requiring four-limb engagement and comfort with mild exposure throughout. The scramble emerges onto a series of open viewpoints overlooking the S-curve of the Hudson River, Storm King Mountain across the water, and the distant Manhattan skyline on clear days. Above the initial scramble the trail continues through highland forest and across additional open ledges to the summit ridge at 1,260 feet. The descent on the yellow-blazed Wilkinson Memorial Trail is less exposed but longer, passing through forest to complete a lollipop loop. Weekend mornings from April through November see hundreds of hikers queued at the trailhead; weekday and early-morning visits provide a far more tranquil experience of this remarkable ridge above the Hudson Highlands.
