East Mountain Loop

The East Mountain Loop provides the most comprehensive rock art circuit available at Hueco Tanks State Park, covering the full perimeter of East Mountain and accessing the widest variety of pictograph sites on a single guided tour route. This longer and more demanding loop climbs over rocky terrain through the syenite boulder formations, visiting panels that span thousands of years of human use of this sacred desert water source. The physical demands of the route are moderate to strenuous given the scrambling required to access some pictograph alcoves and the significant sun exposure on the exposed upper terrain. Guides lead groups through sequenced stops explaining the cultural succession from Archaic period hunter-gatherers through Jornada Mogollon farmers to historic Plains tribes, with each group leaving a distinct artistic legacy on the rocks. The natural tanks that provided reliable water in this harsh desert environment are evident throughout the loop, their smooth basins carved into the rock surface where water collects and slowly erodes the stone. The internationally renowned bouldering areas visible throughout East Mountain draw climbers from around the world, and it is common to observe high-level athletic performance on difficult routes while simultaneously surrounded by ancient cultural heritage. The loop descends through boulder corridors and past dramatic overhangs that shelter both rock art and roosting canyon wrens. Visitor numbers are strictly controlled park-wide, ensuring an intimate experience even on this most complete of Hueco Tanks itineraries.
