East Spur Trail

The East Spur Trail provides guided access to pictograph sites on the eastern flanks of Hueco Tanks, visiting rock art panels that include some of the most vivid and well-preserved examples of Jornada Mogollon painting tradition accessible anywhere in the Southwestern United States. The trail visits a bouldering area that has helped make Hueco Tanks internationally famous among rock climbers, where the textured syenite surfaces of the East Mountain provide exceptional friction and natural handholds on hundreds of established problems. The combination of ancient sacred art and modern athletic culture creates a uniquely layered visitor experience. The pictographs visible on the East Spur include geometric designs, animal figures, and the distinctive masked humanoid figures associated with the Jornada Mogollon culture that flourished in this region between roughly 900 and 1400 CE. Park interpreters on the required guided tours explain the meaning and methods of rock art creation and discuss the ongoing relationship between descendant communities and these ancestral sites. The natural tanks that give the park its name are visible from various points along the trail, their water-worn basins carved by centuries of weathering and still collecting rainwater in a landscape where permanent water sources are extraordinarily rare. The guided requirement ensures a richer educational experience while protecting the irreplaceable cultural heritage from the inadvertent damage that unrestricted access would inevitably cause.
