North Mountain Loop

North Mountain at Hueco Tanks holds the densest concentration of Native American rock paintings in Texas, with over 3,000 pictographs representing some of the oldest and most significant rock art in North America, some dating back 6,000 years. The loop trail through this volcanic syenite rock formation passes paintings created by multiple successive cultures including the Jornada Mogollon, the Kiowa, and various other Plains tribes who used the natural water-catching basins called huecos as critical desert water sources for thousands of years. Access to most of North Mountain requires participation in a guided tour led by a park interpreter who provides cultural and historical context for the rock art and ensures the fragile painted surfaces are protected from inadvertent damage. The paintings include remarkable masks, shamanic figures, bison hunts, and geometric patterns in red, yellow, white, and black mineral pigments. The geology of Hueco Tanks is itself remarkable: the syenite intrusion predates the surrounding landscape and has been exposed by differential erosion over millions of years, leaving three isolated rock mountains rising abruptly from the Chihuahuan Desert plain. The park is also one of the premier bouldering destinations in the world, with hundreds of established climbing routes on the textured stone surfaces. The combination of world-class rock art, exceptional geology, and globally significant climbing makes Hueco Tanks unlike any other state park in Texas.
