Bull Creek Flats Trail

The Bull Creek Flats Trail winds through the heart of Rockefeller Forest, home to the largest remaining old-growth coast redwood forest on Earth and containing several world-record specimen trees. This gentle loop traverses the flat alluvial plain alongside Bull Creek, where towering Sequoia sempervirens rise to heights exceeding 350 feet, their massive reddish trunks creating a soaring green canopy overhead. The understory is lush with sword ferns, redwood sorrel, and trillium, carpeting the forest floor in shades of emerald. Filtered light filters through the canopy in golden shafts, creating photographic conditions of extraordinary beauty throughout the day. The trail passes several named giants, including trees that have stood for more than a thousand years. Winter rains bring the creek to life, while summer mornings are often shrouded in cool coastal fog that the redwoods harvest through their needles. Bird life includes spotted owls, pileated woodpeckers, and Steller's jays. This flat loop is accessible to hikers of all abilities and ages, making it an ideal introduction to the primeval grandeur of the northern California redwood coast.
