Founders Grove Nature Loop

The Founders Grove Nature Loop is a short but profoundly moving walk through an old-growth coast redwood grove dedicated to the founders of the Save the Redwoods League, whose conservation efforts in the early twentieth century preserved these ancient giants for future generations. At the heart of the loop stands the Founders Tree, a towering specimen that once held the record as the world's tallest known tree at 346 feet. A massive fallen giant, the Dyerville Giant, lies along the trail, its enormous root ball and immense length illustrating the sheer scale of mature redwoods in a way nothing else can. The grove atmosphere is hushed and cathedral-like, with diffuse light filtering through the dense canopy and a thick carpet of ferns and sorrel covering the forest floor. Interpretive panels along the route explain the biology of coast redwoods, their remarkable adaptations to fire and flood, and the history of the conservation movement that saved these irreplaceable forests. Despite its brevity, this loop consistently ranks among the most memorable short walks in California, offering an immediate and intimate encounter with trees of geological time scale.
