The Lake Loop Trail encircles the 108-acre Hungry Mother Lake in a gentle, accessible circuit that showcases the park's signature mountain lake scenery while providing excellent wildlife observation opportunities throughout the year. The trail hugs the shoreline closely for much of its length, passing through alternating sections of streamside alder thicket, open picnic grounds, and quiet forested coves where the lake reflects the surrounding Iron Mountain ridges on calm mornings. The lake was impounded in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of the same New Deal project that built the park's original cabins and facilities, and the CCC's stonework is visible in retaining walls and bridge abutments along the trail corridor. Largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish attract a consistent population of great blue herons that wade the shallows with prehistoric patience, and belted kingfishers rattle along the shoreline year-round. The swimming beach area midway through the loop becomes a social hub in summer, while the quieter coves beyond the beach offer solitude and better wildlife encounters. Spring brings wood ducks nesting in hollow trees over the water, and fall migration pushes large numbers of warblers and vireos through the lakeside vegetation. The trail surface is generally well-maintained packed earth with minimal elevation change, making it accessible for families with young children.
