Molly's Knob Trail delivers one of the most rewarding summit experiences in Southwest Virginia, climbing aggressively through mixed hardwood forest to the rocky 3,271-foot summit of Molly's Knob on Iron Mountain, where a nearly four-state panoramic view stretches across Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Kentucky on clear days. The trail wastes no time gaining elevation, ascending steep switchbacks through a chestnut oak and mountain laurel forest where the dense understory gradually gives way to more open conditions near the summit. The knob's rocky quartzite outcrops provide the stable foundation for the summit viewshed, with the Walker Mountain ridge visible to the north and the Marion valley and Interstate 81 corridor laid out below to the west. The legend of Hungry Mother State Park is rooted in tragedy—Molly Marley and her child reportedly wandered these mountains after a Native American raid on a colonial settlement, with Molly surviving long enough to lead rescuers to her location by crying “Hungry Mother” before collapsing. The summit cairn and the surrounding wind-flagged red oak trees bear testament to the harsh exposed conditions that prevail here in winter, when rime ice regularly coats the vegetation. Fall foliage from this summit is extraordinary, typically peaking in mid-October with a full 360-degree panorama of color across the Iron Mountain ridges.
