Big Tesuque Trail

The Big Tesuque Trail at Hyde Memorial State Park provides access from the state park into the Santa Fe National Forest, climbing through the dramatic Sangre de Cristo foothills above Santa Fe to reach high-elevation terrain with sweeping views of northern New Mexico. The trail follows the Big Tesuque Creek drainage upward through a series of distinct vegetation zones that reflect the dramatic elevation change encountered along the route. Lower sections pass through mixed ponderosa pine and Gambel's oak woodland before the trail enters dense spruce-fir forest in the higher elevations above 10,000 feet. The creek corridor provides a constant soundtrack of flowing water and supports lush riparian vegetation including wildflowers, berry-producing shrubs, and moisture-loving plants that thrive in the cool, high-altitude environment. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains visible along the route include some of the southernmost alpine terrain in the Rocky Mountain system, and the trail offers access to this high-elevation world from the culturally rich Santa Fe area. Wildlife along the route includes mule deer, elk, wild turkey, and a variety of mountain bird species. The trail is particularly beautiful in late summer when monsoon moisture brings spectacular wildflower displays and the creek runs strong. Fall foliage in the aspen groves visible from upper sections is among the most colorful in New Mexico. Hyde Memorial State Park serves as an important gateway to the extensive trail network of the Santa Fe National Forest above the historic city of Santa Fe.
