Ethnobotanical Loop

The Ethnobotanical Loop within Iao Valley State Monument is a short educational walk through a living collection of plants that sustained traditional Hawaiian culture. The garden features labeled specimens of taro, the staple crop of ancient Hawaii used to make poi, alongside breadfruit, sweet potato, sugar cane, and medicinal herbs used by Hawaiian healers known as kahunas. Interpretive signage explains the practical and spiritual significance of each plant in traditional Hawaiian society, where plants were considered gifts from the gods and carefully cultivated using sophisticated agricultural techniques. The taro plant holds particular importance as a symbol of the Hawaiian creation story, in which the first taro plant was the elder sibling of the first human. The loop is entirely flat and accessible, making it suitable for all ages and abilities. The lush setting within the emerald walls of Iao Valley, fed by heavy rainfall from the West Maui Mountains above, provides a fitting backdrop for understanding the deep connection between Hawaiian culture and the natural world that sustained it for centuries.
