Rendezvous Region Trail

The Rendezvous Region Trail at Icelandic State Park offers a gentle loop through the park's wooded lakeside landscape, connecting the day-use areas around Lake Renwick with the celebrated Icelandic Heritage Museum complex. The trail meanders through a rare patch of mixed hardwood forest in a region otherwise dominated by open prairie and agricultural fields, making it an anomaly of biological richness in northeastern North Dakota. Mature oak, ash, and elm shade the path, and understory shrubs provide nesting habitat for warblers and other neotropical migrants during spring and fall migration periods.

The route passes close to the Icelandic Heritage Museum, a remarkable outdoor living history site that preserves original and reconstructed structures brought to North Dakota by Icelandic immigrants who settled the Pembina County region beginning in the 1870s. Interpretive panels along the trail describe how these settlers adapted their traditional Icelandic building techniques and farming practices to the harsh northern plains climate. The lakeside sections of the loop offer pleasant views across Lake Renwick, a shallow prairie lake where pelicans and cormorants are regular visitors.
