Sugar Camp Hollow Trail

Sugar Camp Hollow Trail provides the most immersive backcountry experience in Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, looping through the rugged eastern Kentucky hardwood hollows and ridge systems that define the landscape of the Big Sandy River watershed in the heart of the Cumberland Plateau's dissected southwestern flank. The trail descends immediately into the hollow's intimate creek-carved terrain, where the mixed mesophytic forest—considered by ecologists to be the most diverse temperate forest community in the world—reaches its characteristic density and layering. Sugar maple, the hollow's namesake and the source of the local sugar-making tradition that continued in these hills through the early 20th century, dominates the cove headwalls alongside yellow buckeye, basswood, and white ash, their canopy creating deep summer shade and brilliant orange-and-gold fall color. The hollow floor is carpeted in spring with a succession of wildflowers that begins with bloodroot and hepatica in late February and continues through wild blue phlox, trillium, jack-in-the-pulpit, and mayapple through May. The ridge section of the loop climbs steeply to a chestnut oak-dominated ridgeline with periodic views across the adjacent hollows toward the Dewey Lake reservoir visible to the north. The trail's length and terrain changes make it the most physically demanding experience in the park, and the solitude of the hollow sections contrasts sharply with the resort facilities visible from the ridge, reinforcing the sense of entering a genuinely wild eastern Kentucky landscape.
