Clifton Gorge Loop

The Clifton Gorge Loop traverses one of the most botanically significant gorges in Ohio, where the Little Miami River has cut a deep canyon through dolomite and limestone bedrock at the transition zone between glaciated and unglaciated terrain. The gorge harbors a remarkable assemblage of rare plants, including the dwarf hackberry, cliff-brake fern, and walking fern, many of which are relict species from post-glacial climates that survive only in the cool, sheltered canyon microclimate. The trail descends to river level and follows the Little Miami past a series of small waterfalls and cascades, including the Devil's Bathtub, a circular pothole carved by swirling gravel-laden water. Dolomite cliffs rise 60 to 80 feet on both sides of the narrow gorge, their faces draped in liverworts and moisture-loving ferns. The river corridor is a State Nature Preserve, and off-trail travel is strictly prohibited to protect the rare vegetation. The loop returns via the upland rim, passing through open cedar glades where prairie wildflowers bloom in summer. The trail connects to Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve for those seeking a longer route. No fee is charged for parking or trail access.
