Mangrove Trail

Mangrove Trail at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park winds through a dense red mangrove forest on an elevated boardwalk, providing intimate access to one of Florida most productive and ecologically essential coastal ecosystems. Pennekamp holds the distinction of being the first undersea park established in the United States, protecting a vast section of the Florida Reef Tract, and the mangrove trail offers an accessible introduction to the land portion of this extraordinary preserve. The boardwalk passes directly over the prop root maze of red mangroves, allowing visitors to peer into the tannin-stained water below where juvenile fish take shelter.

Snook, mangrove snapper, and tarpon use the mangrove roots as nursery habitat before moving to the offshore reef as adults. Roseate spoonbills and little blue herons wade through the shallow water alongside the boardwalk, and black-crowned night herons roost in the canopy overhead. The trail also passes the park kayak launch area, where visitors can paddle directly into the mangrove channels for a more immersive experience. Interpretive signs explain the ecological roles of mangroves in coastal protection, carbon storage, and fish production. The short loop is suitable for all ages and abilities, making it an ideal first stop for visitors before venturing to the reef by boat or snorkel tour.
