The Kitching Creek Trail is Jonathan Dickinson's signature hike, a 7.6-mile loop through the remarkable ecological diversity of the park's interior. The route crosses from Florida scrub—sandy, open habitat with ancient relict plant communities—through longleaf pine flatwoods to the banks of Kitching Creek, a tidal tributary of the Loxahatchee Wild and Scenic River. This progression from xeric upland to estuarine tidal creek in just a few miles is one of the most compressed and dramatic ecological transitions in Florida hiking.

Florida scrub-jays inhabit the open scrub sections and are approachable and curious, often landing within arm's length of hikers. Gopher tortoises are abundant throughout. Near Kitching Creek, the vegetation shifts abruptly to subtropical wetland species—leather fern, swamp bay, and red mangrove at the tidal interface. River otters patrol the creek, and manatees occasionally venture up the tidal section from the Loxahatchee. The moderate rating reflects the trail's length and occasional deep sand. A backcountry campsite at the creek enables overnight stays. Morning hikes dramatically increase wildlife encounter rates in the scrub sections.
