Backbone Trail

The Backbone Trail in Kisatchie National Forest showcases the most dramatically eroded sandstone formations in Louisiana, a landscape that regularly astonishes visitors who arrive expecting flat Gulf Coast topography. Centuries of rainfall have carved the Catahoula sandstone into ridged formations, gullied ravines, and sculpted buttes that glow rust-red in the afternoon light. The trail follows the spine of a narrow sandstone ridge for much of its length, offering continuous views into the surrounding longleaf pine forest.

The red and orange sandstone exposed along the route is geologically significant and visually striking, standing in sharp contrast to the green of the surrounding vegetation. Seeps and small springs emerge from the base of the sandstone bluffs, supporting dense mats of mosses, ferns, and wildflowers. The trail surface alternates between sandy pine-needle duff and bare rock, requiring sure-footedness in places. Spring brings an abundance of wildflowers including wild azalea, trillium, and native orchids. The loop format allows hikers to experience the full range of the formation while returning efficiently to the trailhead.
