Falls Branch Trail

The Falls Branch Trail at Lake Catherine State Park leads to a lovely waterfall tucked into a narrow hollow of the Ouachita foothills above the lake. The cascade drops over a mossy sandstone ledge into a clear pool in a setting framed by ferns, wildflowers, and the dense hardwood forest characteristic of the lower Ouachita Mountains. The intimate scale of the waterfall and its hidden, grotto-like setting make it feel like a discovered secret rather than a well-known destination.

The trail climbs steadily from near the lakeshore up into the hollow, following the tumbling stream through a forest of shortleaf pine, white oak, and red maple. The creek produces a continuous soundtrack of moving water that makes the ascent feel more energetic than the modest distance might suggest. Wildflowers are abundant in spring, with hepatica, bloodroot, and wild columbine appearing along the trail margins. The falls are most impressive after rainfall, when the flow increases dramatically. The out-and-back format means hikers retrace the same scenic route, experiencing the forest from a different perspective on the return and often noticing details missed on the way up.
