Horse Trail Loop – Lake Catherine Sp
The Horse Trail Loop at Lake Catherine State Park traverses a varied landscape of lakeshore bottomland and pine-covered ridges above the southern reaches of the Ouachita Mountains, providing a thorough introduction to the natural character of this corner of Arkansas. The trail is open to both hikers and equestrians, and the wide, well-maintained path reflects its dual-use nature. The route alternates between shaded pine ridge sections and open lakeshore segments that offer continuous water views.
The pine ridges along the upper portions of the loop are covered in mature shortleaf pine, a species that once dominated the Ouachita Mountains before twentieth-century logging and fire suppression transformed the landscape. Restoration efforts are visible in some sections where prescribed fire has been reintroduced to maintain the open, grassy understory that shortleaf pine requires to regenerate. Wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and red-headed woodpeckers are commonly observed throughout the route. The lakeshore sections provide excellent fishing access, and the views across Lake Catherine toward the forested ridgelines to the north are consistently beautiful throughout the hike.
