Shoreline Trail

The Shoreline Trail at Lake Catherine State Park follows the wooded edges of Lake Catherine, a scenic reservoir created by the Remmel Dam on the Ouachita River. The trail provides excellent fishing access at numerous points along its length, and anglers regularly cast from the shoreline throughout the route. Lake Catherine is known for its largemouth bass, catfish, and bream populations, and the clear Ouachita foothills water supports a healthy aquatic ecosystem visible in the shallows along the trail.

Hummingbirds are a notable attraction along the Shoreline Trail, particularly in late summer when ruby-throated hummingbirds gather in numbers before their fall migration. Trumpet vine and cardinal flower growing along the water's edge attract these tiny birds in significant concentrations that delight hikers willing to pause and watch. Great blue herons, belted kingfishers, and wood ducks are also regularly observed. The trail gains minimal elevation and stays close to the water throughout, making it an accessible and consistently rewarding walk for visitors of all abilities. The combination of water access, wildflower color, and hummingbird activity makes late summer a particularly fine time to visit.
