The Upper Ledges Trail climbs to the canyon rim where Savanna-type vegetation transitions between eastern deciduous forest and western prairie. Compass plant, rattlesnake master, and other prairie species colonize the exposed limestone ledges. The viewpoint overlooks the Des Moines River valley and the canyon carved by Pease Creek below. Monarch butterflies congregate at the summit prairie during September migration.
