Overlook Trail

The Overlook Trail climbs sharply from the park visitor center to a prominent viewpoint above the Jefferson River valley, rewarding the steep ascent with one of the finest panoramic views available in this section of southwestern Montana. The Jefferson River valley stretches in both directions from the overlook, framed by the Tobacco Root Mountains rising to the east and rolling bench lands descending to the west, the entire scene encompassing an expanse of geology and landscape history spanning hundreds of millions of years.

The route follows a dry south-facing hillside vegetated with bunchgrass, sagebrush, and scattered ponderosa pine, habitat that supports rattlesnakes during warm months so hikers should watch their step on rocky sections. Mountain bluebirds and western kingbirds perch on shrub tops throughout the slope, and soaring raptors including Swainson hawks and turkey vultures ride thermals above the valley during summer afternoons. The overlook itself provides the best surface-level context for understanding the cave system hidden in the limestone cliff below, as the karst topography that enables cave formation is visible in the surface geology of the surrounding hillsides.
