River Trail

The River Trail at Little Talbot Island State Park explores the Nassau Sound shoreline and interior maritime forest, a habitat mosaic that stands in striking contrast to the open Atlantic beach on the island other side. The protected sound waters are calm and productive, supporting extensive seagrass beds, oyster reefs, and the rich nursery habitat that makes Northeast Florida estuaries ecologically vital to the regional fish and wildlife communities.

Wading birds are the signature wildlife of the sound margin, with great blue herons, tricolored herons, snowy egrets, and roseate spoonbills regularly visible from the trail. Bottlenose dolphins hunt the channels between oyster bars. The maritime forest interior provides critical habitat for resident birds and migrating songbirds during spring and fall migration when the tree canopy can be alive with warblers, vireos, and thrushes. Live oaks festooned with Spanish moss create the quintessential coastal Georgia-Florida maritime atmosphere. Red-shouldered hawks nest in the hammock and their calls ring through the forest year-round. The loop provides a comprehensive experience of Little Talbot Island interior habitats, complementing the open beach experience of the South Beach Trail.
