South Beach Trail

The South Beach Trail at Little Talbot Island State Park follows one of the most pristine and naturally dynamic barrier island beaches remaining on the Northeast Florida Atlantic Coast. Unlike the heavily developed shorelines of Jacksonville Beach and neighboring resort communities, Little Talbot Island has been protected from development, preserving its natural dune systems, maritime forest edge, and the seasonal rhythms of a living barrier island ecosystem.

Loggerhead sea turtles nest here from May through October, with marked nests a common sight along the upper beach during summer months. The park coordinates an active turtle monitoring program, and early morning walks during nesting season may encounter fresh crawl tracks where females came ashore overnight. Shorebirds including American oystercatchers, willets, and red knots forage along the surf line seasonally. The dune system behind the beach supports sea oats, beach morning glory, and other pioneering plant species that stabilize the sand. North end of the trail approaches the inlet at the island tip where currents create excellent conditions for fish and the diving birds that pursue them. The combination of sea turtle conservation, undeveloped beach scenery, and dynamic inlet ecology makes the South Beach Trail one of the most ecologically interesting walks on the entire Florida Atlantic Coast.
