Arthurs Rock Trail is the premier hike in Lory State Park, climbing steadily through ponderosa pine forest and open meadows to a dramatic 1,780-foot granite summit overlooking Horsetooth Reservoir and the city of Fort Collins below. The trail gains 1,200 feet of elevation over 1.7 miles, making it a challenging but rewarding out-and-back route suitable for fit hikers and trail runners. Rocky scrambling near the summit adds excitement, and the panoramic views of the Cache la Poudre valley and the eastern plains stretching to the horizon make every step worthwhile. Wildlife including mule deer, wild turkeys, and golden eagles are frequently spotted along the way. The trailhead sits near the main park entrance and fills quickly on weekends, so an early morning start is strongly recommended. Parking is limited and the $10 vehicle fee is collected at the entrance gate. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trail is open year-round, though winter ice can make the upper section treacherous without traction devices. Bring plenty of water as there is no potable water on trail.
