Timber Trail – Lory Sp
Timber Trail traces the western hogback ridge of Lory State Park, offering sweeping panoramas of the Fort Collins skyline and the entire northern Front Range from a moderately elevated perch above the valley floor. The 4-mile loop gains 400 feet across varied terrain that alternates between shaded ponderosa groves and exposed sandstone ridgeline sections where the wind picks up and views open dramatically in every direction. Interpretive markers along the route explain the geology of the Dakota Hogback formation and the ecology of the foothills transition zone between plains and mountains. Mountain bikers share portions of this trail, so hikers should remain alert and yield appropriately on narrow singletrack sections. The trail is particularly beautiful in autumn when the scrub oak turns deep burgundy and rust against the evergreen pines. Early morning visits offer the best chances of spotting mule deer, coyotes, and wild turkeys before the midday heat drives wildlife into the shade. The $10 vehicle fee is collected at the park entrance. Water is not available on trail, so hikers should carry adequate supplies especially during summer months when temperatures can climb well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
