Century Lake Trail

Century Lake Trail explores the diverse interior of Malibu Creek State Park, combining the iconic volcanic gorge scenery with views of a tranquil reservoir and the historic Regan Ranch area in a satisfying moderate loop. From the main trailhead the route passes through the volcanic gorge corridor before ascending to Century Lake, an artificial reservoir created in 1901 that now serves as a focal point for wildlife in the park. Great blue herons, egrets, and migratory waterfowl congregate around the lake shore, while turtles bask on submerged logs near the water edge. The trail continues past the Regan Ranch area, once a working cattle operation and later a Boy Scout camp, whose structures and orchards now slowly return to nature within the park boundaries. Goat Buttes, the striking volcanic formations that feature prominently in the M*A*S*H filming locations, loom dramatically above the canyon throughout much of the route. The varied terrain traverses riparian corridors, chaparral slopes, and oak woodlands, supporting an impressive diversity of bird species that makes this loop popular with birders throughout the year. The return leg offers different perspectives on the volcanic landscape. Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are recommended, along with water for the exposed ridge sections.
