Rock Pool Trail

Rock Pool Trail is the signature hike at Malibu Creek State Park, leading through a dramatic volcanic gorge to one of the most beloved natural swimming holes in the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail follows Malibu Creek through a stunning landscape carved by volcanic activity and millions of years of erosion, creating the rugged canyon walls that made this location irresistible to Hollywood filmmakers. The M*A*S*H television series filmed many of its exterior scenes in this canyon, and remnants of the old film set including rusted vehicles remain visible near the creek, drawing fans from around the world. The centerpiece of the hike is the Rock Pool itself, a deep emerald swimming hole enclosed by sheer volcanic rock walls where Malibu Creek pauses before continuing toward the Pacific. In summer the pool draws crowds of swimmers and picnickers, while in winter the creek runs high and swift, transforming the canyon with the drama of rushing water. The loop returns through oak woodland providing welcome shade. Wildlife including great blue herons, red-tailed hawks, and mule deer are regularly observed along the route. Spring wildflowers brighten the hillsides in March and April. Parking fills early on weekends during warm months so an early arrival is strongly recommended.
